Assessment 1 analysis of a film noir opening sequence

SIN CITY

Dimension films

Troublemaker studios

Fade in from black to see the full city (in black and white)

A woman walks towards a balcony rail and her dress is distinctively red, set against the black and white. (Reference Frank Miller’s graphic novels of Sin City)

The story is being narrated by the lead for this story

Shot reverse shows the young woman as the lead walks slowly out behind her.

Story is still being narrated until he speaks the line “care for a smoke?”

Shot reverse shot; she turns round and says “Sure.”

Close up of her hand taking a cigarette out of the packet.

Cut back to her face ‘over the shoulder’ of the lead.

Shot reverse shot follows their conversation, backwards and forwards, every time focusing on her facial expressions.

Close up of the lighter sparking up, and cu back to her face, waiting for her cigarette to be lit. Lead says “Its your eyes.” And her eyes glow green amidst the clack and white. So far these are the only other 2 colours we’ve seen.

Shot focus’s on the woman and the lead as he tells her about all her insecurities, the camera starts slowly zooming in as you see her expression change as she starts to get a little upset.

It starts to rain as shot reverse see’s her turn round, she’s started to cry a little.

The narration comes back in as the film cuts to black and white sepia and slow saxophone music comes in. Zoom in cuts back to standard black and white. She leans in for a hug and he shoots her.

Tilted angle looking down, hears him finish his speech and then zoom out to opening titles.
